Tour Historic Grounds with a Knowledgable Guide! - We had such a lovely experience with this small group tour organized by Athens Walks. Our guide, an archeologist by training, was incredibly knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and made the history of Athens come alive. I wish I remembered her name, because she truly made the experience special. The group size was perfect (about 15 people), so it felt intimate but not overly crowded. We made around 7 or 8 stops on the way up to the Acropolis to learn about different landmarks, which also helped break up the walk and made the climb very manageable. Bring water, as it does get warm. The tour also included entry to the Acropolis Museum, which was a highlight in itself, so many well-preserved artifacts and stories that add dimension to the ruins. If you're planning to see the Acropolis, I highly recommend booking a guided tour like this one to truly appreciate what you're seeing.

Complete and informative tour of the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum - This is a half-day tour. Once we checked in, we were given headphones so that we could hear our guide. Our guide was Ioanna Paraskevaidi. She directed us to the entrance to the Acropolis. After going through the metal detector, she started the narrated tour. The walk to the top is steep, often on uneven ground, and includes some ramps and stairs. Our guide stopped regularly to explain what we were seeing. These stops allowed us to catch our breath and take photos. She provided detailed historical and architectural facts about the many areas and temples of the Acropolis including the Theatre of Dionysus, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus theater, the Parthenon, the Proylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Erechtheion. The Parthenon, which is the primary feature at the top of the Acropolis, is dedicated to the goddess Athena. Parts of the top façade still have a few pieces of the decorative friezes. The guide explained that the temple once housed a massive wood statue of Athena which she explained was originally covered in gold and ivory. She told us that the temple has been damaged by earthquakes and various invaders of the area. She explained how the structure was used by various religious groups throughout history. It was once being used to house explosives during a war. An explosion during that time ruined part of the structure. Our guide explained that many artifacts, sculptures, and friezes were taken by various invaders and are now housed in other countries such as Germany and England. The Temple of Athena Nike was dedicated to the goddesses Athena and Nike. In Greek mythology, Nike is the goddess of victory. Our guide explained that Nike is often depicted as a winged woman representing triumph in war and athletic competitions. Athena is the Greek goddess of wisdom, warfare, and handicraft. She is also the patron goddess of the city of Athens. She is often depicted in art as a warrior, fully armed with a helmet, spear, and shield. The Erechtheion is generally believed to be dedicated to Athena and Poseidon. It is probably best recognized by the Porch of the Maidens (Caryatid Porch) which has six sculpted female figures as supports for the roof. These sculptures are replicas. The originals that remain are in the Acropolis Museum. We also saw the Theatre of Dionysus on the south slope of the Acropolis. This theatre fell into decay in the Byzantine era. It was excavated and restored to its current condition in the 1800s. The Odeon of Herodes Atticus (also called the Herodeion) is a stone Roman theatre on the southwest slope of the Acropolis. Our guide explained how it originally looked and how It fell into disrepair and was renovated several times throughout history. It is still in use today. Our guide was patient, answered our questions, and even helped by taking photos of us. After this part of the guided tour and before we walked back down the hill, she allowed us time to walk around on our own and take more photos. Then, we walked down from the Acropolis to the Acropolis Museum. Our guide directed us through this modern museum which houses artifacts found on the acropolis rock and on the surrounding slopes. There is a full-scale model of the Parthenon with its sculptures and friezes to show how the temple originally appeared. In this museum we also saw the original Caryatids (female sculptures) from the Erechtheion. The guide explained that this museum has replicas of some of the sculptures and friezes that are now located in museums in England and Germany. The museum lies over the ruins of part of Roman and early Byzantine Athens. Glass floors in some areas of the museum make it easy to look down onto the archaeological dig. You can also walk down to that level below the museum and see the archaeological dig areas up close. After the museum tour, the guide escorted us to a local taverna for a Greek lunch.

Greek Food Tour - Wonderful experience with "Dora" as our guide. Toured all the local Greek food experiences including the Athens Market. Enjoyed all the food and friendships made with fellow travelers. A good bit of walking in the heat of Athens but we stopped frequently to nibble, sip and rest a bit.

Great experience - Make sure to wear a hat and comfortable running shoes because it’s lots of walking and climbing stairs up to the acropolis. Bring a small back pack so you can carry water. Great experience tho for me, my wife and 4 grown daughters. Get the museum tour after with the included lunch at a local cafe.

EXCELLENT tour guide!!! - The Tour Guide was AWESOME!!! I forget her name!!! She was young and energetic and so enthusiastic about her subject. She was very knowledgeable. I booked the tour with the lunch. The food was good. The restaurant was cute... The only problem is that the guide didn't eat with us. I kinda expected her to... I was going to tip her and feel bad that she left while I was being seated..
