Highlights
  • Basilica Papale e Sacro Convento di San Francesco d’Assisi - The Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Order of Friars Minor Conventual in Assisi, a town in the Umbria region in central Italy, where Saint Francis was born and died
  • Basilica Papale e Sacro Convento di San Francesco d’Assisi - This bright and spacious basilica consists of a single four-bay nave with cross-vaulted ceiling bordered with patterns of crosses and leaves, a transept and a polygonal apse. The four ribbed vaults are decorated alternately with golden stars on a blue background and paintings.
  • Santa Maria sopra Minerva - The Temple of Minerva is an ancient Roman building. It currently houses a church, Santa Maria sopra Minerva, built in 1539 and renovated in Baroque style in the 17th century.

The temple was built in the 1st century by will of Gnaeus Caesius and Titus Caesius Priscus, who were two of the city’s quattuorviri and also financed the construction.

  • Chiesa Nuova - Erected in 1615 on the remains of a building believed to be the home of St. Francis. The building’s architecture design is from the Renaissance period. The façade, built of brick, is divided by four pillars supporting a Doric entablature, with attic gable, above which rises a hemispherical dome.
  • Basilica di Santa Chiara - The Basilica of Saint Clare is a church dedicated to and contains the remains of Saint Clare of Assisi, a follower of Saint Francis of Assisi and founder of the Order of Poor Ladies, known today as the Order of Saint Clare.
  • Eremo delle Carceri - It’s located 4km away from the center of Assisi. The white building nestles in a quiet lane surrounded by mountains. This is the hermitage of the Carceri where St. Francis and his followers were praying and meditating. “Eremo” means hermitage in Italian
  • San Damiano - San Damiano is a church with a monastery near Assisi, Italy. Built in the 12th century, it was the first monastery of the Order of Saint Clare, where Saint Clare built her community.
  • Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli - Built on a grandiose scale, the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli is the seventh largest Christian church. Its magnificence may be at odds with the simplicity preached by St Francis himself but the flocks of pilgrims coming to visit the primitive Porziuncola chapel and the Cappella del Transito called for a building that was able to accomodate the faithful.

A thoughtful and moving tour of discovery into the foundation of the Franciscan movement. - The entire trip was so deeply touching. It was a journey through Saint Francis's life and conversion. It also included a side trip to visit Blessed Carlos Acutis. My wife and I are believers with and affinity for Saint Francis. This was the main focus of our trip to Italy. Our wonderful guide, Alexandra made this so much more impactful. In addition, her knowledge of local customs, culture, and history contributed greatly to our wonderful experience in Assisi. It added much depth and understanding. We felt so welcomed. I might also add that she made our tour fun!

Come to know St. Francis - Our guide, Michele Tomassoni was well informed, sensitive to our needs and good company. He knew all the art and architecture, but more importantly he has a personal appreciation for the life and spirit of St. Francis. We signed up for the full day tour, the morning at the major basilicas and other sites in the town of Assisi and the afternoon at the key sites in the life of St. Francis outside the town, something we would not have wanted to miss. We had only one day in Assisi and could never have done this much on our own. There are less expensive options, but we chose a full day private tour for 300 euro and it was well worth it. We saved an additional 100 euro by providing our own transportation to the sites outside the town, since we had a rental car. I am sure they have many good guides, but if you can get Michele you will not be disappointed.
