The drive from Arusha to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain.

We now leave the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. Lower down, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We continue a short distance until we reach the Machame Camp.

Additional Information

The seven-day Machame route is the preferred plan for this trail. With this route, the hike from Barranco to Barafu is split over two days, which allows for a shorter day right before the challenge of reaching the summit. This is crucial as the final ascent starts very early, about midnight, which can lead to climbers experiencing sleep deprivation during the most demanding day on the mountain. By having a shorter day before, it helps climbers to be better prepared and rested.

Most leading Kilimanjaro operators highly suggest the 7-day Machame route.

The Perfect Kilimanjaro and Safari Holiday - We booked the Machame Route with Moorlands when in Arusha after contacting Nasr via WhatsApp. And that was a great decision… Moorlands (and Nasr in particular) were super helpful, flexible, organised and welcoming from start to finish. We only had a couple of weeks in mainland Tanzania but were keen to fit in a lot: a Kilimanjaro climb, a Safari, the hot springs and a coffee tour (despite not having pre-booked anything). We contacted Nasr on our first day, and within a couple of hours, almost our entire holiday was organised (with the Kilimanjaro climb starting the next day), and, best of all, at a very reasonable price. Note: it’s easiest to organise most things via WhatsApp. If you want to reach out, Nasr’s number is: +255 65 807 0113 KILIMANJARO - MACHAME ROUTE Amazing experience! We opted for the 7 day Machame route (ie tents not lodges) and ended up completing our climb in 6 days. Nasr then (free of charge) put us up in a (very nice!) hotel for the extra day while we waited to start our safari the following day. Our main guides for the climb were John and Elly - and honestly, I could not recommend them enough. If you are looking to climb Kilimanjaro, I would specifically request these two guides, as they were 10/10 - so friendly, fun, experienced, motivated, as well as speaking great English and being very knowledgeable about the mountain. Also a big shout out to our chef, assistant chef and porters who went over and beyond and made the whole thing possible. Also, note that the tents / equipment provided are great quality and the team’s summit success rate is very good. SAFARI After our climb, we then did a 3 day safari package which included the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Again, Nasr pulled everything together to perfectly fit our schedule and we had a perfect safari experience. Both the Serengeti and Ngorongoro are special, must-visit places in Tanzania, and the amount of animals you see is insane. Overall: one of the best 2 weeks of my life, all made possible and organised by Moorlands - thanks again guys!! (Male, U.K., 27 y.o.)
