Highlights
  • RanaSella - Asturiana School of Canoeing - The Descent of the Sella in canoe or kayak (canoes), is among the star activities within the adventure sport in Asturias. Very well known thanks to the International Descent of the Sella, a sporting event that every first Saturday in August (after the 2nd of that month) brings together athletes from all over the world. The activity invites you to get on a Kayak or Canoe to, in a totally safe way, go down the river from our facilities to one of the arrival points that we have enabled. It takes place on the section of the river between Arriondas and Llovio (16 km) in Ribadesella - although we offer you the option of making shorter sections, which you can choose during the descent, such as the Toraño bridge (7 km), Llordón ( 11 km) and the already mentioned one of Llovio.
From each of these points we will transport you in vehicles back to the starting point.
Born in the Picos de Europa the Sella, this low section takes place in a dreamlike landscape between meadows and riverside vegetation with Atlantic-type trees and associated fauna, among which the most representative is salmon, but it is accompanied by a great number of birds, and mammals like the otter.

Additional Information

Often regarded as the national river despite its small size of just 75 km, the Asturian Sella has gained nationwide recognition primarily due to canoeing. Historical records suggest that this river represented the advent of canoeing in Spain. The renowned International Descent of the Sella has been a celebrated event since 1930. Experience the thrill that the rowers feel every year on the first Saturday of August as they navigate the mesmerizing surroundings of this Asturian river, immersing yourself in the typically Atlantic flora and fauna. The illustrious Soto brothers, esteemed canoeists and winners of the International Descent of the Sella, are known for their skilled and professional expertise and they are always ready to provide advice. The activity is family-friendly and also accessible to those who are physically disabled. Assistance is available in Spanish, English, and French.

An outstanding experience - Definitely the best company to do the lowering of the seal. From the facilities, with a huge parking lot, to the quality of the canoes and especially the human part. Always attentive to make the experience unforgettable. We'll repeat for sure.

Super fun canoe adventure - Everything is well organized. You get good explanations and the pick-up also went smoothly. The setting is beautiful and it is a fun family activity. Keep in mind that it can be extremely busy with other canoeists. We hadn't realized that.

A bucket list trip-fulfilled! - The Sella River is so picturesque and the kayaking was superb. It's a 0-1 'rapids' section of the river, so for us two older folx with minimal kayaking experience, it was perfect. There are 3 options for exiting the river depending on your stamina. A basic picnic (meh) is provided. This is not a guided experience but they do give you all the info needed to help you feel safe. Highly recommend! [But skip the picnic.]

Highly recommended - We did the long descent of 16 km, the landscapes are very suggestive, it was wonderful to feel immersed in greenery and silence (we were lucky, we were practically alone) It's both relaxing and challenging because, even if calmly, you have to paddle for 4 hours with a wet bottom... I didn't have any problems but I'm used to it. Very practical is the fact that, if you want to stop at the previous stages, you can do so and call the guys who will come and pick you up immediately. Absolutely do it

The peace, the landscape, the environment - We will repeat again, I went with my wife and we promised to return. Rana seals a company dedicated to this spectacular activity for the treatment they gave us. The Soto brothers are great professionals. Thank you very much

Good fun but avoid high season if you can - Well organised by the ‘frog’ company so four stars for them but only three stars for the overall experience because there were so many kayaks on the river (perhaps what you should expect on a warm sunny day in August, but the frequent jostling of kayaks did diminish the enjoyment somewhat). Otherwise, lots of people and dogs of all ages enjoying themselves! Plenty of stopping points, with cafes, along the way to pull over and take a break from the log jam

Unfortunate service - I made the descent of the Sella on 3/8/24 and the service was terrible (not the descent itself which is highly recommended). This is the third time I’ve done it (the first with ranasella) and it was by far the worst of all. 1) One of the reasons I had contracted with ranasella was because they had assured me that I had parking (I had previously spoken to them by phone and they assured me). They told me to go before 9:30 and I did. But, surprise, I couldn't access the parking lot. Not least because a frog van had Locked one of the entrances to the facility. After spending over an hour trying to access the facilities by car, which was impossible, I had to pay for parking elsewhere. I have told several frog people about this and they did not care 2) We arrived at the facility at 11.15 and... IT WAS CLOSED!!! And they didn't open again until 12:30!!! Amazing! I had not been told this either on the web or when I spoke on the phone. 3) Once we could get in and they gave us the equipment we went with a monitor who was going to “explain” us. Beyond some basic instructions (which it is true that not much more is needed) I spend much of my time “scolding” ourselves as children by repeating several times about what we are responsible for the equipment and about the pickup points in a tone not according to adults from my point of view. 4) Once the descent was done we parked the canoe where the frog sign was (at stop 2). But those who were there of ranasella did not like where we parked and made us do a lap (get back in the river advance and repark the canoe) all to advance... about 4/5 meters because, I understand, they did not want to drag the canoe those meters more on the shore. I put the assessment on the service, not on the descent of the label which is more or less the same with all companies. My Personal Impression is that it is the typical company that knows / thinks that the vast majority of people only perform the descent once and do not repeat, therefore it does not matter a little bit the service offered to them, total will not return. I do not recommend this company, especially there are so many and being able to choose other options that better treat the customer.
