Pergamon – Thyatira - Izmir (Breakfast)
Pergamon Ancient City - Travel to Pergamum, one of the Seven Churches of Asia [Rev. 1:11; 2:12]. Explore the impressive Acropolis, the Asklepieion, and see the Altar of Zeus, referred to as the “Throne of Satan” in the book of Revelation.
Izmir – Sardis – Philadelphia – Laodicea – Hierapolis (Breakfast - Dinner)
Sardis (Sardes) - Depart early to visit Sardis, one of the most scenic areas of the Seven Churches of Asia [Rev. 1:11; 3:1-4], now known as Sart. Once the capital of the ancient Lydian kingdom in the 6th century BC, it is depicted as a dying church. Visit the grand Temple of Artemis and the Temple of Cybele, which became a Byzantine Church. Also, see the restored gymnasium, reconstructed Synagogue, and the last stretch of the royal Persian Road from Susa to Sardis built by Cyrus the Great, along with the “golden” river Pactolus. Lunch will be provided en route.
Laodicea - Continue to Laodicea, founded in the 3rd century BCE by Seleucid Antiochus II and named after his wife Laodicea. Situated on the Lycus Tributary of the Meander River, it was known as Laodicea on Lycus to distinguish it from other cities with similar names. As the last of the seven churches, it held a significant commercial and logistical position at the crossroads of two major roads.
Hierapolis & Pamukkale - Travel to the healing city of Hierapolis, now Pamukkale, the “cotton fortress” where hot mineral water flows from the earth, creating pools, channels, and stalactites. The therapeutic waters were known to the founders of Hierapolis and Laodicea in 190 BC. In Hierapolis [Col. 4:13], visit the Martyrium of the Apostle Philip, where he was martyred during the persecutions ordered by Domitian.
Ephesus – Kusadasi (Breakfast - Dinner)
Ancient City of Ephesus - Journey to Ephesus to explore the ancient city, including the Basilica of St. John. The Apostle Paul preached to the Ephesians and lived here for three years, and this church received an epistle from him. Tour the spectacular ruins where excavations continue in this once-great city, founded in the 10th century BC. Walk along marble streets lined with magnificent public buildings, including the Baths of Scholastica, the Library of Celsus, the Temple of Hadrian, and the Theatre. The Temple of Diana of the Ephesians, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was also located here.
Meryemana (The Virgin Mary’s House) - Visit the House of Virgin Mary, located on the Aladag Mountains, 5 miles from Ephesus. At the third Ecumenical Council in 431 AD in Ephesus, it was claimed that Mary came to Ephesus with St. John in 37 A.D. and lived there until her death in 48 A.D. After the house’s discovery, the Archbishop of Izmir declared it a place of pilgrimage in 1892. On July 26, 1967, Pope Paul VI visited and prayed there.
The Basilica of Saint John - After visiting the House of Virgin Mary, proceed to St. John’s Basilica, where it is believed that the evangelist St. John spent his last years and was buried on the southern slope of Ayosolug Hill.
The Temple of Artemis - Stop at the Temple of Artemis, once one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, as the final stop before returning to Kusadasi.
Kusadasi - Arrive in Kusadasi, check into the hotel, and enjoy dinner and an overnight stay.
