VICUÑA NATIONAL RESERVE | MISTI BASE CAMP

Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve - At 8:30 am, the operator will pick up participants to visit the most significant water dam in Arequipa city, located on the northern side of El Misti. By 9:30 am, the group enters the Vicuña Reserve, traveling gradually higher along a winding, bumpy route between the Chachani and Misti volcanoes. A stop is made at over 4000 meters to appreciate the stunning mountain scenery, blanketed with unique Andean flora and fauna. There is a good chance of observing wild South American camelids searching for food and water. The journey continues across the water dam to reach 4200 meters, marking the start of the climbing excursion. Participants are encouraged to stretch, have a snack, and prepare for the climb. The hike progresses gradually up a sandy and ashy path, with stops along the way to catch one’s breath, rehydrate, and rest. It typically takes about 3.5 hours to reach Monte Blanco base camp, situated at 4810 meters. Later, a delicious hot dinner is prepared by the tour guide, who will also discuss the plan for the following day. Rest well.

Volcan Misti - The day begins with a delightful breakfast, including coca tea, and at 2:00 am, the climb to the summit of El Misti begins. All necessary climbing equipment is taken, and the climb lasts approximately 6.5 to 7 hours. The terrain remains sandy and ashy, with the mountain’s inclination changing significantly as the ascent continues. A slow pace is recommended to find a good rhythm for efficient progress. Upon reaching the edge of the main crater, participants will be amazed by this extraordinary location. A brief stop allows for enjoyment and reflection before continuing to the summit, where a breathtaking 360° panoramic view awaits. Time is taken to savor this wonder before preparing to return to base camp, which takes about 1.5 hours. After resting, everything is packed up, and at the designated time, the descent continues for another 1.5 hours to reach the waiting vehicle, which will transport everyone back to the city. The tour concludes at the hotel.
