Gallipoli National Park - Discover the battlefields of the Anzac sector, starting from the beach where the first Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) soldiers landed at dawn on April 25. Follow their original trails into the hills above the coast and along the front line where they were stopped by Turkish forces.
The sites visited include:
• Ariburnu Cemetery, located at the northern end of Anzac Cove, where the first Australian soldiers landed on April 25, 1915.
• Anzac Cove, the main landing beach for Allied soldiers and the primary base for Allied troops throughout the campaign.
• Anzac Commemorative Site, where Anzac Day is observed every year on April 25 to honor the fallen.
• The Sphinx, named after the Sphinx in Egypt.
• Hell Spit Cemetery at the southern end of the cove, the final resting place of John Simpson Kirkpatrick, the stretcher bearer known as the Man with the Donkey. -
Gallipoli National Park -
• Plugge’s Plateau, a steep 100-meter hill overlooking ANZAC Cove and Shrapnel Valley, captured on April 25, 1915, by the 11th Battalion, 3rd Brigade of the AIF.
• Shrapnel Gully, a winding valley from the coast to the New Zealand and Australian front lines, used by many to reach the front.
• Lone Pine, the site of the Australian memorial and intense fighting on April 25 and throughout the campaign, especially in August.
• Johnston’s Jolly, a plateau north of Lone Pine with a network of original tunnels and trenches.
• The Nek, the site of the famous charge by the Australian Light Horse, depicted in the movie Gallipoli.
• Chunuk Bair, the location of the New Zealand Memorial, built on the hill taken by New Zealanders during the August offensive, and the highest point captured during the campaign. -
