The seventeenth-century canals of Amsterdam, located in the center of Amsterdam, were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in August 2010.[1] The Amsterdam Canal District consists of the area around the city’s four main canals: the Singel, the Herengracht, the Keizersgracht, and the Prinsengracht. From the Brouwersgracht, the canals are generally parallel with one another, leading gradually southeast into the Amstel river.

Many of the canal houses in the Amsterdam Canal District are from the Dutch Golden Age, 17th century. Many of these buildings, however, underwent restoration or reconstruction in various centuries, meaning that these building display many different architectural styles and facades

  • Westerkerk - The Westerkerk was built between 1620 and 1631 in Renaissance style according to designs by architect Hendrick de Keyser (1565-1621). He is buried in the church he designed earlier: the ‘Zuiderkerk’. The building of the Westerkerk was finished and completed by his son Pieter de Keyser (1595-1676) and inaugurated on June 8, 1631. The church has a length of 58 meters and a width of 29 meters. The high nave is flanked by the two lower aisles. The three-aisled basilica has a rectangular plan with two transepts of equal dimensions. As a result, the plan for this church was given the form of two Greek crosses connected with each other.

  • Magere Brug - The famous skinny bridge across the river Amstel and opposite of the Carré theatre, is an Old Dutch design wooden bridge known as a double-swipe (balanced) bridge. Tradition relates that the bridge was named after the sisters Mager, who were supposed to live on opposite sides of the river. They are said to have had the wooden bridge built to make it easier to visit one another. However it appears more likely, that the original bridge acquired the name from being so narrow (mager means skinny in Dutch), that it was hard for two pedestrians to pass one along another.
  • InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam, an IHG Hotel - The InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam Hotel, commonly referred to as the Amstel Hotel, is a hotel in Amsterdam, capital city of the Netherlands, on the east bank of the river Amstel.

The Amstel Hotel is part of the InterContinental Hotels chain. In 2006 the building was sold to Morgan Stanley. In 2011 the Lebanese businessman Toufic Aboukhater bought the hotel. In 2014 the hotel was acquired by Qatar-based Katara Hospitality, but is still operated by the InterContinental Hotels Group

A rainy day made good. - It is not fancy but worth the nominal price. It was a rainy day but rain had stopped. The wet windows caused some visabilty issues but we were able to open a window. The boat is enclosed and that is one reason we chose it. The audio was good and the captain was informative. The registration staff were easy going and polite. By the way, the cheese was very good

Recommended evening canal cruise - Nice canal cruise in the evening, with audio telling interesting history of Amsterdam. Passing bridges with lights is beautiful . The captain was verily friendly and also told some fun facts. You could also sit at the end of the boat cruise with no roof to take nice pics. Meeting point is easy to find.

Nice tour bit be careful what you buy and get. - You should get headphones from the captain. The audioguide can only be listened to, when you have headphones with AUX. Without it the tour was nice and beautiful but too long and too boring. Also be sure what you buy, i was not sure in forehand that i also bought wine and cheese, which i did not want.
