Hegra - Begin your tour with a visit to Hegra, also known as Madain Saleh or Al-Ḥijr, an archaeological site in the AlUla area within the Al Madinah Region in the Hejaz, Saudi Arabia. Most of the remains date back to the Nabatean kingdom. The site is the kingdom’s southernmost and largest settlement after Petra, its capital.
The Archaeological Site of Al-Hijr (Madain Saleh) is the first World Heritage property to be listed in Saudi Arabia. Formerly known as Hegra, it is the largest preserved site of the Nabataean civilization south of Petra in Jordan. It features well-preserved monumental tombs with decorated facades dating from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. - Jabal AlFil (Elephant Rock) - Next, enjoy Elephant Rock, a spectacular rock formation that resembles an elephant with its trunk touching the ground. It is one of AlUla’s geomorphological wonders and has become one of AlUla’s iconic landmarks.
Elephant Rock, also known as Jabal AlFil, is one of AlUla’s many geological marvels.

Exceeded our expectations! - A local Saudi guide, Abo Faisal, picked us up from our hotel and took us up to a cliff overlooking the city of Al-Ula before taking us to a meeting point for the tour bus. Charming Saudi women handled our ticketing, we were in a large, comfortable bus. We went to Dandan where the tombs of the Dandan people were in the sides of the mountains. We 'dug' for ancient artifacts (a fun exercise) and cataloged the finds as if we were archeologists.
Then we continued on to where there is an actual excavation of the ancient city's ruins.
We had a lunch break and Abo Faisal took us to an authentic, local restaurant where we had delicious chicken and rice, served on a tray in a private room. We ate on the floor, it was simple and clean and really fun. Abo Faisal took us to the Banyan Tree hotel location where there was the Mariya mirror building for photos.
Abo Faisal returned us to a meeting area to catch another bus tour. From there we traveled on to Hegra where the Nabatean tombs are. All the tour guides were young, bilingual Saudi youth who were very polite and informative. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day! It completely exceeded our expectations. Abo Faisal returned us to our hotel (we glamped in tents because there were no available hotels) Check out Friday Suites in Al-Ula, owned by Abo Faisal if you can't find a hotel!
