Discover the historic 100-year-old British shipwreck, the Minnewaska, resting at a depth of approximately 20 meters. This ship, sunk by a mine in 1916, was constructed by the same company as the Titanic, the White Star Line! The name Minnewaska is derived from an American Indian term meaning “clear water.” Built in Belfast in November 1908, the ship was 183 meters long and originally designed as a passenger steamer. During World War I, it was repurposed by the British military for troop transport. On November 29, 1916, while departing Souda with troops on board, the ship hit a mine laid by the German submarine UC23. With a breach below the waterline, Captain Gates attempted to steer the ship towards the nearest land to beach it in the Marathi area.
