4 Stans Visit - We had a fantastic trip. It was a real adventure. We were wonderstruck with the natural beauty, rich history and culture and particularly the friendliness of the people. The guides and drivers were excellent. Many thanks for Kamilla’s help in organising this unforgettable trip and getting the visa for Tajikistan. BH and Tim

For majestic landscapes, rich history n culture, a world heritage that should be preserved - Coming to Central Asia with little expectation except to have a good time with 12 senior but fit friends in all, I must admit I was overwhelmed by the immense n breathtaking beauty of the amazingly vast landscapes, history, architecture, craftsmanship, hospitality n unique experience of each “Stan”. Sure they do share a somewhat common Turkic language n history, conquests by various Persian, Greek empires, khanates n belonging at one time to the Soviet Union. Yet, each country has a unique charm n distinct language of their own. Unfortunately we were not able to visit Turkmenistan as getting visas were problematic. Our trip was planned in detail by Minzifar Travel n in particular Kamilla from Uzbekistan who allayed our many concerns n questions n even did a video call with us before we left our safe n comfort zone at home!! Each country we visited had their own English Speaking Guide n drivers (comfortable Mercedes coaches), who were excellent in service with only one exception (driver) out of many. Kamilla hand held us all the way n checked in with us everyday. All our guides were well informed n fluent. We enjoyed getting to know them n their personal family stories to understand their culture better. We coached, took train n flew domestically. Although majority Muslim, all the 4 Stan’s we visited were officially secular so as a predominantly Christian Protestant group we did not feel uncomfortable as we felt that just about everyone we met were so humble, kind and hospitable. Especially memorable were the Lakes Kaindy n Ussyl Kul, the snow capped mountains, the sheer expanse of the Tian Shan Mountain range n Charyn Gorge!! Staying in cosy n hospitable guest houses n yurts (with attached hot water shower n toilets) added much to the invaluable local experience. Kudos must also be given to our excellent, cheerful n attentive drivers who manoeuvred winding mountain roads with ease. Most of the roads were well made except for the exhilarating ride on what seemed like a rackety school bus that bounced us over stony river beds some dry n others not so dry for short stretches. We were laughing at each other as we held on tightly whilst bouncing up n down for the fun of it!! Then there are the toilets!!! Oh my!!! From bush stops (rare) to holes in the shed, to super clean n glitzy light flashing on mirrors by the highway service station….we saw n experienced it all!!! I cannot leave out the home industry visits to the see silk making, weaving, natural dyeing, blacksmiths, pottery painting experience many of which were passed down 5 or 6 generations!! Then there are the stunningly beautiful majestic Mosques, Minnarets, Madrasahs n Mausoleums!!!! Many destroyed by invaders but reconstructed in all their glory they are truly marvels of human creativity n design, each with a rich story to tell , for example about architects leaving their signatures on the inscriptions only to be identified n murdered if their mosques did not meet expectations!!! As a Christian I came away with a much deeper respect n knowledge for Islamic history n deep faith of many who sacrificed much for their faith to achieve great architectural heights as well as deep inner well being. I would be amiss if I did not describe the food….pilaf or Plov is a national delicious dish of rice cooked with oil n spices with tender pieces of lamb or beef some with yellow n orange carrots, chickpeas, onions….each country n restaurant boasting of having the best!! Absolutely yummilicious!!! Then there are the salads, such a variety of tasty sweet bright red tomatoes, traditionally with cucumber n onions n secret salad dressings that made them taste so super fresh that one never tired of it!! Ah ….all the food served everywhere tasted freshly prepared although we did see heaps of salads in the markets for sale too. For those interested in history, there are Stone museums with petroglyphs dating back to the 3rd Century BC n many ancient cities protected by UNESCO to explore. Definitely worth the visit!!!
