Highlights
  • Alexandria - Begin your full-day tour of Alexandria by meeting your guide at your hotel. Alexandria, Egypt’s second-largest city and main port, has a population ranging from 3.5 to 5 million. Founded on a small village by the orders of Alexander the Great, the city immortalizes his name. It grew into a major cultural, political, and economic hub in the Mediterranean. Stretching about 20 miles along the Mediterranean coast in north-central Egypt, Alexandria is now a significant industrial center, thanks to natural gas and oil pipelines from Suez and numerous industrial factories. It is also a popular summer resort for Egyptians due to its pleasant summer weather.
  • Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - The largest Roman burial site in Egypt, featuring a multi-level labyrinth accessed via a large spiral staircase. The catacombs include numerous chambers adorned with sculpted pillars, statues, and other Romano-Egyptian religious symbols, burial niches, sarcophagi, and a large Roman-style banquet room for memorial meals. Forgotten for centuries, the catacombs were accidentally rediscovered in the 1800s. Nearby stands Pompey’s Pillar, originally part of a temple colonnade.
  • Pompey’s Pillar - A massive 25-meter (82-foot) pink granite monument with a 9-meter (30-foot) circumference. It should be called Diocletian’s Pillar, as it was erected for the emperor in AD 297. It is the only monument that remained standing after the Crusaders’ violent arrival around 1000 years later.
  • Ancient Roman Theater, Alexandria - Also known as the Roman Theatre, located near the Greco-Roman Museum. It features semicircular marble terraces and was discovered during the construction of a new apartment building. The theatre is very well preserved.
  • Sidi Morsi Abu al-Abbas Mosque - Located in central Alexandria, Abu El Abbas Mosque is a shrine for a holy Sufi, with additional shrines for other holy Muslims nearby. The mosque’s main dome is beautifully decorated and is its main highlight. The exterior offers a panoramic view. As a place of Muslim worship, visitors should show respect by removing their shoes, and men should not wear shorts while women should be veiled and wear long clothing. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant during the tour. At the end of the day, return to Cairo.
  • Kayetbai - A defensive fort overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, said to be built on the ruins of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
  • Bibliotheca Alexandrina - Inaugurated in 2003, this modern library replaces the ancient Royal Library of Alexandria, once the largest in the world before it was destroyed by fire.
