• Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - Start your day with a convenient pick-up from your hotel in Cairo and enjoy a 3-hour drive to Alexandria. Discover the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, one of Alexandria’s most intriguing ancient sites. This necropolis, showcasing a blend of Pharaonic, Hellenistic, and Roman styles, dates back to the 2nd century AD. Descend the circular staircase into the underground tombs, which display a unique fusion of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art. The site features several sarcophagi, statues, and a central burial chamber. The catacombs served as a burial site until the 4th century and were rediscovered in 1900.
• Pompey’s Pillar - Then, visit Pompey’s Pillar, a majestic granite column symbolizing Roman triumph in Alexandria. Despite its name, the column is not related to the Roman general Pompey. Discover the historical significance of the site as the location of the Serapeum, a temple dedicated to the god Serapis. The temple was destroyed in 391 AD during the rise of Christianity, and today, only the pillar and some tunnels remain. Explore the surrounding area, where remnants of the Serapeum and recovered artifacts, such as a black basalt bull, provide insight into the city’s ancient history.
• Fort Qaitbey - End your tour with a visit to Fort Qaitbey, a 15th-century fortress on the Mediterranean coast. The citadel was constructed by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qa’it Bay in 1477 AD to protect Alexandria from Ottoman invasions. Explore the fortress, located on the historic site of the ancient Pharos Lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. • Biblioteca de Alexandria - Begin with a pick-up from your hotel in Cairo and travel to Alexandria. Start the tour with the Library of Alexandria, the largest library in the world, now housing 8 million books. Visit the President Sadat Museum and the open court, where you can see statues of Alexander the Great and Ptolemy the First, which were found underwater nearby. The guide will explain the library’s design from the outside, and you will have opportunities for photo stops. Note: The Alexandria library is closed on Fridays, Saturdays, and public holidays. To enter the reading area, a ticket purchase is required.
