- Al Khor - Also spelled Al Khawr, it means “sea on three sides” in Arabic. Although older than Doha, it is much smaller in size. Al Khor is conveniently located 50 kilometers north of Doha. It was once the hub of Qatar’s pearling industry but lost its significance with the advent of cultured pearls. Today, it features a picturesque harbor with traditional fishing dhows, a corniche leading to mangrove colonies, and a museum that highlights the fishing, pearling, and dhow-building industries.
- Purple Island - Al Khor Island - This tranquil island, located beyond Al Khor, is rich in mangroves and lush greenery. Purple Island offers a chance to reconnect with nature, away from the city’s hustle and bustle. It provides various activities for the whole family, including long walks, family picnics, and kayaking.
- Al Zubara Fort - Located in the northwestern part of Qatar, Al Zubarah Fort was constructed next to the ruins of an ancient fort. Al-Zubarah was once a thriving port and a hub for trade, fishing, and pearling. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, this protected area is one of Qatar’s most significant archaeological sites. An international team of archaeologists and antiquities experts, led by the Qatar Museums Authority, has uncovered numerous artifacts displayed in the renovated fort.
- Shadows Traveling on the Sea of the Day - by Olafur Eliasson - This site-specific artwork consists of twenty circular shelters, three single rings, and two double rings, which at first glance appear randomly scattered across the desert landscape. However, they are arranged according to the axes of a fivefold symmetrical pattern, with ten shelters at the center forming a pentagram. The principles behind these patterns were recently discovered by Western mathematicians, although they may have influenced some of the intricate designs in Islamic cultures since medieval times.
