Located in Midan al-Qal’a, near the Cairo Citadel, this mosque was built to complement the nearby Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan. Constructed in the 19th century, it was part of a campaign to modernize Cairo and associate the rulers with Egypt’s Islamic history. The mosque is situated near two large public squares and several European-style boulevards.

Mosque of Ibn Tulun - Next, visit the Ibn Tulun Mosque, one of Cairo’s oldest mosques still in its original form and the largest in terms of land area. Commissioned by Ahmad ibn Tulun, the Turkic Abbasid governor of Egypt from 868–884, the mosque was completed in 879 AD. It is built on Gebel Yashkur, “The Hill of Thanksgiving,” where local legend says Noah’s Ark came to rest after the Deluge.

Al-Azhar Mosque - Continue your tour with a visit to Al-Azhar Mosque in Islamic Cairo. Commissioned by Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah of the Fatimid Caliphate in 970, it was the first mosque established in Cairo, which is now known as “the City of a Thousand Minarets.” The mosque is named after Fatimah, the daughter of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - Visit the Sultan Hassan Mosque, a massive Mamluk-era mosque and madrassa near the Cairo Citadel. Built between 1356 and 1359, the mosque was remarkable for its size and innovative architecture. It was designed to include schools for all four Sunni schools of thought: Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanafi, and Hanbali.

Khan Al-Khalili - End your tour at Khan Al-Khalili Bazaar, originally a marketplace for foreigners during the Islamic empires. Now a tourist destination, it features shops selling Egyptian souvenirs and numerous coffee shops where you can relax and enjoy a shisha after your tour.
