Start your day by visiting the Roman Theater. Roman theaters evolved from earlier Greek theaters, with much of their architectural influence coming from the Greeks. Unlike Greek theaters, Roman theaters were typically built on their own foundations rather than on earthen works or hillsides and were fully enclosed. These theaters were constructed throughout the Roman Empire, from Spain to the Middle East, showcasing unique Roman architectural features.
• Rashid Citadel of Qaitbay - The Qaitbay Citadel is a significant fortification on the Mediterranean coast. Built by the Mamluk Sultan al-Ashraf Abu al-Nasr Qaitbay between 1477 and 1479 AD, it stands on the ruins of Alexandria’s Lighthouse and served as a defense against naval attacks. The citadel, made of limestone, covers an area of approximately 17,550 m² and is surrounded by an outer wall with defense towers. Inside, an inner wall encloses the courtyard, which includes rooms used as barracks and storage. The entrance leads to the courtyard, where the main tower, a massive three-floored square fort with half-circular towers at each corner, is located. A nearby tank provided water for soldiers and their horses.
• Bibliotheca Alexandrina - The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a major library and cultural center on the Mediterranean shore in Alexandria, Egypt. It commemorates the ancient Library of Alexandria, one of the largest libraries of antiquity. The idea to revive the old library emerged in 1974, and construction began in 1995. After an investment of around $220 million, the library was officially opened on October 16, 2002. In 2009, it received a donation of 500,000 books from the Bibliothèque nationale de France, making it the sixth-largest Francophone library in the world. The library has shelf space for eight million books, with the main reading room being a highlight.
• Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - The Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa is a historical archaeological site in Alexandria, Egypt, and is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages. The necropolis features a series of tombs, statues, and artifacts that blend Pharaonic, Hellenistic, and early Imperial Roman influences. The catacombs merge Roman, Greek, and Egyptian cultural elements, with some statues displaying Egyptian styles but Roman clothing and hairstyles. A circular staircase, used to transport bodies, leads down to the tombs, which were carved into the bedrock during the 2nd century CE and used until the 4th century. The site was rediscovered in 1900 when a donkey fell into the access shaft.
• Mosque of Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi - The Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque is a historic mosque in Alexandria, named after the 13th-century mystic Abu’l Abbas al-Mursi, who is buried there along with members of the Ashraf family. Abu’l Abbas al-Mursi died in 1286 and was initially buried in a small cemetery. A small qubba was later built over his grave, which developed into a shrine. In 1307, a mosque was constructed over the shrine, funded by Zain al-Din al-Qattan, a merchant and Sufi shaykh. The mosque was rebuilt by the Mamluk emir of Alexandria in 1477. In 1934, King Fouad I ordered the construction of a mosque square, including the mosque-shrines of Al-Busiri and Yaqut al-Arshy, with the Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque at the center. The building was renovated and extensively rebuilt. The tour concludes with a drop-off at your hotel in Alexandria.
