Al Jahili Fort - This 19th-century fortress has been converted into a cultural center, featuring a permanent exhibition dedicated to Sir Wilfred Thesiger, the adventurous explorer, travel writer, and photographer who, along with his Emirati and Omani companions, crossed the world’s largest sand desert, the Rub’ al Khali (“the Empty Quarter”), twice in the 1940s. The fort also includes a temporary exhibition gallery. Surrounded by a verdant park, it was awarded the prestigious Terra Prize for contemporary architecture in raw earth.
