This UNESCO World Heritage site features exceptional monuments and the ruins of the ancient city of Akragas, set in a rural landscape with century-old olive and almond trees.
Scale of the Turks Visit: Among the many stairways known, this one stands out as particularly unique. It is not a traditional staircase but a stunning coastal stretch that has become a symbol of Sicilian seaside tourism. This white cliff, located between Realmonte and Porto Empedocle (Agrigento), is composed of soft limestone and dazzling white marl. The sea, contrasting with this bright white, displays a vibrant blue. While sitting on the steps and admiring the sea, visitors are enveloped in pleasant thoughts. The adventurous can reach the beach to the west via the stairway, finding a quieter spot for swimming. The name “Scale of the Turks” is believed to originate from the times when marauding Arab and Turkish ships sought refuge in this bay.
