Constructed in the 16th century by the Saadian Sultan Mohammed ech-Cheikh to oversee Portuguese settlements along the coast, it played a strategic role in regional defense. The name “Agadir Oufella” means “the upper fortress” in Amazigh.
• Aourir - Aourir, often referred to as the “Banana Village,” is a small rural town located about 12 km north of Agadir in the Souss-Massa region. The name is derived from the numerous banana plantations that line the main road and the banks of the Tamraght River. According to local legend, musician Jimi Hendrix helped popularize this nickname during a visit in the 1960s.

The village is renowned for its relaxed, authentic atmosphere, offering a peaceful contrast to the hustle and bustle of Agadir. Every Wednesday, the weekly souk attracts locals from the surrounding areas to shop for fresh produce — especially bananas — and enjoy the vibrant ambiance.
