There is debate regarding the origins of the so-called Portuguese Bridge. Some believe it was constructed in the 16th century by the Portuguese, while others claim it was built by Ras Darge, Menelik’s uncle, in the 19th century. After crossing the bridge, turn left along the riverbank until reaching a large rock, perfect for viewing the 600-meter waterfall. Spot the Galada Baboons, which are unique to Ethiopia.

Leave Addis Ababa at 7:30 AM. Just over 100 km from the city, Debre Libanos is a top choice for a day trip from the Ethiopian capital. The church is grand, and while the exterior may not be impressive, the stained-glass windows are captivating. Debre Libanos boasts one of Ethiopia’s most fascinating church museums. In addition to typical ecclesiastical artifacts, the museum features Italian firearms, large cooking pots, crowns of former emperors and their consorts, musical instruments, and ancient wooden shackles. A fifteen-minute hike up the hills from the monastery leads to the cave of Tekla Haimanot, the monastery’s founder, where the saint is believed to have prayed. This cave is also the source of Debre Libanos’ renowned holy water.
The tour concludes with a visit to the Portuguese Bridge at the Blue Nile Gorge, where visitors can enjoy breathtaking views and observe the unique Ethiopian endemic Chelada Baboons. There is also an opportunity to see a variety of Ethiopian bird species.
