Bishoftu is a town situated in central Ethiopia. It is located in the East Shewa Zone of the Oromia Region, at an altitude of 1,920 meters (6,300 feet).

Previously known as Debre Zeyit (‘Mount of Olives’), it has been officially called Bishoftu since the late 1990s, adopting its Oromo name from bishaanooftuu, meaning “watery,” which was its name until 1955.

The town is home to the main airbase of the Ethiopian Air Force.
