In August 2019, marking 400 years since the first documented arrival of a slave ship in Virginia, which intensified the dreadful Middle Passage, hundreds of descendants of formerly enslaved Africans will proudly return to their ancestral homeland. This journey will lead them to Ghana: the birthplace of Kwame Nkrumah, the architect of Ghana’s independence and a co-founder of the Organization of African Unity; the nation where the esteemed pan-Africanist Dr. W. E. B. DuBois spent his final years; the region where Ashanti Kings continue to hold court and resolve disputes through time-honored traditions passed down through generations; the country that has preserved more slave dungeons used in the transatlantic slave trade than any other on the continent. Ghana was the first sub-Saharan African nation to achieve independence from European rule and is now a flourishing democracy, yet its traditions, customs, and culture remain largely intact.
