- Abydos - Your journey begins with a pickup from your hotel or Nile cruise in Luxor by a tour guide. You’ll then be driven in a private air-conditioned vehicle to Abydos city. Head north from Luxor for a day trip to explore two of Egypt’s most well-preserved temples. The Abydos Temple is dedicated to the ancient Egyptian god of the underworld. Abydos is one of the oldest cities in ancient Egypt and was part of the eighth nome in Upper Egypt. It is situated about 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) west of the Nile at latitude 26° 10’ N, near the modern Egyptian towns of El Araba El Madfuna and El Balyana. In ancient Egyptian, the city was known as Abedju. The English name Abydos is derived from the Greek Ἄβυδος, a name borrowed by Greek geographers from the unrelated city of Abydos on the Hellespont. The name Abydos is also represented in hieroglyphs.
- Temple Of Seti I - Located in Abydos, one of the most significant archaeological sites in Ancient Egypt, the Temple of Seti I is about 10 km from the Nile River in Upper Egypt. Abydos served as a necropolis for Egypt’s earliest kings and later became a pilgrimage center for the worship of the god Osiris. It was also a site where the cults of deified ancient Egyptian kings were celebrated.
The Temple of Seti I features an unusual L-shaped ground plan and is primarily constructed of limestone, with some sandstone used in various parts of the structure. The temple was completed after Seti I’s death by his son, Ramesses II, whose cartouches and characteristic sunk relief style can be found in certain areas of the temple, contrasting with the fine raised relief of his father. The entrance to the temple is on the northeast side, accessed through a large, now-destroyed pylon, leading into the first open court, which is also significantly damaged.
- Dendera Temple Complex - Hathor was one of the most important and beloved deities in ancient Egypt, associated with music, joy, dance, and motherhood, and known as the lady of the sky. Her main cult center was at Dendera, where one of Egypt’s best-preserved temples stands today. The temple entrance, featuring six massive columns topped with Hathor’s head, is considered one of Egypt’s most beautiful monuments. Sistrums, musical instruments closely associated with the goddess, frame her head.
The Dendera Temple dates back to the Ptolemaic Period, though evidence suggests older structures once existed on the site, dating as far back as King Pepy I of the Old Kingdom. Notable features of the temple include astronomical engravings on its ceiling.
The temple is located in Dendera, north of Luxor. After the tour, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Luxor around 5:00 PM.
