*Fee: ¥500 (approximately 3-5 USD) per adult
Want to feel like you’re seeing Kyushu from the air without ever actually leaving the ground? Make your way to the Kokonoe Yume Grand Suspension Bridge just north of the Kuju mountain range in western Oita prefecture. The bridge seems to float over the forested valley below, constructed at an impressive 777 meters off the ground. It is 390 meters long to cross from one side to the other and takes on average twenty minutes to cross. These stats make it the longest and highest pedestrian suspension bridge in the world and as such, it offers spectacular views. From the center of the bridge, you can see two waterfalls, one of which is listed on Japan’s 100 most famous waterfalls list. In autumn, the gorge here is awash in fall colors and this is a favorite spot for leaf-peepers in Kyushu.

It takes about 20 minutes to cover the distance without lingering, but there are enough interesting shops, cafes, and galleries to merit an hour or two of strolling. The buildings lining the street are low-rise and mostly traditional in appearance. Mt. Yufu rises above the street, adding to the picturesque setting. It is a nice place to wander and sample some local delicacies, coupled with a walk around the lake and a relaxing soak in one of the area’s many hot springs.

Five of the seven hells are located in the Kannawa district, and two in the more remote Shibaseki district.

[ sightseeing boat ] Fee: ¥1500 (approximately 10 USD) per adult https://mannaka.co.jp/sightseeingboat/
The “Oboke and Koboke Gorges” were made by the rapid current of the Yoshino River crossing Shikoku Mountains over a period of 200 million years. These gorges are eight kilometers long and boast a beautiful landscape looking like soaring marble sculptures. There are two theories about the origin of their strange names: they are either derived from the sound of the word “Hoki/Hoke”, an archaism meaning a cliff, or “dangerous (危) to walk (歩) long (大) stride” (Oboke, 大歩危) and “dangerous (危) to walk (歩) short (小) steps, too” (Koboke, 小歩危). The Oboke Gorge has beautiful rocks and a V-shaped valley, which can be observed closely and shows how the Japanese archipelago has been formed. It makes the gorge a valuable place and was designated as a national monument.
Marugame Castle - [ Day-6 ] 15:45-16:30 < guided walk > Marugame Castle, Ichibancho, Marugame, Kagawa

Marugame Castle was constructed about 400 years ago. The keep tower (the highest part of the castle, used as a lookout) is made of wood, a rare style of construction in Japan, and has been designated as a National Important Cultural Heritage. The stone wall that leads up to the keep tower is the largest of its kind in Japan, at a height of approximately 60 meters. The elegant curvature of the wall is one of its finest features. This castle was chosen as one of Japan’s Best 100 Castles. The determination is made by a group of specialists that cover the fields of architecture, engineering, archeology, and history, and it is one of the cultural prides of the country.

We recommend a day trip to Shodoshima, an island in the Seto Inland Sea. https://shodoshima.or.jp/
Takamatsu (高松) is the capital of Kagawa, Japan’s smallest prefecture. The city’s port used to be the main entry point to Shikoku Island until the opening of the Seto Ohashi Bridge in 1988. The Matsudaira Clan, relatives of the Tokugawa Shogun, controlled Takamatsu’s former castle town and surrounding area, then known as the Sanuki Province, during most of the Edo Period. The ruling clan is also responsible for the construction of Ritsurin Koen, one of Japan’s most beautiful gardens.

*This is your completely free day. Our bus and guide will not accompany you.
The Seto Inland Sea is an inland sea dotted with many small islands. Because it is an inland sea, it is calm with almost no waves. We recommend a day trip to Shodoshima, an island in the Seto Inland Sea. https://shodoshima.or.jp/
Shodoshima is the second-largest island in the Seto Inland Sea, with a population of 28,500 and an area of 170 km2 (as of April 1, 2017). The island is known as the Mediterranean of Japan, both for its year-round temperate climate and as the birthplace of olive production in the country. Traditional food production, such as soy sauce slowly fermented in wooden barrels or sun-dried somen noodles, continues to thrive after 400 years. Cuisine using these time-tested methods is found in abundance.

Meriken Park - [ Day-8 ] 16:00-17:00 < shopping > Meriken Park, 2 Hatobacho, Chuo Ward, Kobe, Hyogo
Meriken Park (メリケンパーク) is a nice waterfront park in Kobe’s port area. Built on an outcropping of reclaimed land, the park is covered in grassy lawn and open courtyards dotted with a collection of modern art installations and fountains. It is home to some of the city’s more iconic contemporary architecture such as the red Kobe Port Tower and the Kobe Maritime Museum. The park was devastated by the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake, but has now become a popular spot for locals and tourists again. A small memorial commemorates the many victims who were killed in the port during the earthquake. A short section of damaged waterfront has been left unrepaired as a reminder of the earthquake’s tremendous destructive power.
