The Perfect First Day in Iceland

Bridge Between Continents - Simply a footbridge put between the fissure, to symbolically explain how Iceland represents the separation of the North American and European tectonic plates

Reykjanes Lighthouse - Is an iconic and the oldest lighthouse built in Iceland. The lighthouse is perched atop a hill that is not too far from some massive cliffs that overlook the ocean.

Valahnukamol - Valahnúkamöl cliffs jut out of the ocean 33 feet high, repeatedly pounded by the elements for thousands of years resulting in its craggy weathered appearance.

Gunnuhver Hot Springs - impressive and colorful geothermal field of various mud pools and fumaroles tale of Gunnuhver is an example of classic Icelandic folklore, tying together the harshness of life on the island, ghosts, curses, and the saving power of Christianity.

Krýsuvík - The main geothermal areas in Krysuvik banks around the hot springs are colored green, yellow, and red. Columns of steam rise skywards and the bubbling mud pools play their rhythmic symphony.

Kleifarvatn Lake - Kleifarvatn is one of the largest lake in Iceland, about 10km2 and about 136 meters above sea level. The lake is located on the Reykjanes peninsula between Sveifluhálsar and Vatnshlíðar. It is the largest lake on the Reykjanes peninsula and the third largest in South Iceland. The greatest depth of the water is about 97 meters.

Fagradalsfjall Volcano Eruptions: 2023, 2022, 2021 - Impressive fresh dried lava valley from last volcano eruption

Brimketill - A small, naturally carved pool, by marine erosion, at the lava shore edge west of the town of Grindavík.

Grindavik - A fishing town on the Reykjanes Peninsula with a coziest coffee house in Iceland

Hafnaberg - Is a long line of sheer sea lava cliffs south of the old fishing hamlet of Hafnir.

Golden Secrets aka Golden Circle

Thingvellir National Park - Is one of the best geological wonders in Iceland. This UNESCO World Heritage Site and Game of Thrones film location. Epic Icelandic landscape, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet!

Þingvellir means assembly fields and in the year 930 AD, Iceland’s historic democratic parliament – one of the first in the world – was founded there. Most Icelandic people regard Þingvellir as a sacred place, a place of great beauty and an incredible stepping stone in their history.

Geysir - The Great Geysir, which is no longer active. The area is filled with steam vents, bubbling pits, and sizzling ponds, with multicolored patches dotted here and there. The main show of the site is the active Strokkur Geyser that gushes 20 meters up in the air every 5 to 10 minutes. The spectacular, lively sight is the highlight of the Geysir geothermal field.

Gullfoss Waterfall - It is an astonishing waterfall originating from Iceland’s second-largest glacier Langjökull. Its roaring cascade first runs down a gradual slope for 11 meters (36.01 ft) then tumbles down deep into the canyon with a 21 meter (68.9 ft) magnificent, wide drop, creating impressive, beautiful mist to splash up in the air, reflecting a giant rainbow in the sunlight.

Kerid Crater - We will first make a stop at the Kerid Crater in the Golden Circle, a volcanic crater lake that formed around 3000 years ago. It’s famous for the stark contrast in colors - maroon mineral sediment, dark lava rocks, and blueish lake water - forming a naturally eye-pleasing sigh

Fridheimar - The one and only Friðheimar Tomato Soup served on a buffet with sour cream, home-baked bread, cucumber salsa, butter and fresh herbs

Secret Lagoon - Gamla Laugin - The Secret Lagoon, known locally as Gamla Laugin, is the oldest swimming pool in Iceland. It was made in 1891 at Hverahólmi, a geothermal area near Flúðir.

Snæfellsnes - wonderful north western peninsula

Olkelda Mineral Spring - natural mineral spring, said to produce water with many different health benefits.

The mineral water, which is rich in iron and has stained the surrounding ground a bright red, can be accessed via a public tap

Ytri Tunga Beach - Beautiful ocean scenery and the seal colony reside here.

Budakirkja - The small church was constructed from black wood. The church, rebuilt in 1987 on the site of the original 18th-century building, is picturesque in itself, but what makes Búðakirkja unmissable is its impressive surroundings. Possible lunch at a restaurant located next to the church.

Sönghellir Cave - Sönghellir Cave offers a further insight into Iceland’s rich history. Sönghellir (the “singing cave”) is gifted with brilliant acoustics, which has made it famous for its echoes. The cave is also home to centuries-old graffiti, including the names of two 18th-century travellers.

Londrangar Basalt Cliffs - Londrangar and the hill Svalthufa are the remains of a crater, which has been eroded to its present form by the sea.

The farmers in the area never made or make hay on the hill, because it is said to belong to the elves living in the area.

Younger lava fields surround this old crater ruin. The higher pillar (75m) was first climbed in 1735 and the lower (61 m) in 1938.

Djupalonssandur Beach - one of the most beautiful black lava pearl beaches in Iceland. This is an arched-shaped bay with mysterious rocks, intense black sand, marvelous coast rocks, and black pebbles too
Reynisfjara Beach is one of the most well-known black sanded beach in the whole world. This is a place of wild and dramatic beauty where the roaring waves of the Atlantic Ocean power ashore with tremendous force. In 1991, Reynisfjara appeared on the top ten list of the most beautiful non-tropical beaches in the world, and it is very easy to see why it was chosen!

Saxholl Crater - axholar Crater was another unplanned stop that caught our eye from the road. The 109m crater was formed by a volcanic eruption 3–4000 years ago.

A staircase has been constructed up the side to protect it and it only takes about five minutes to reach the top.

It’s fascinating to see inside the crater and there are fantastic views of the lava fields, mountains, and sea.

Kirkjufellsfoss - Kirkjufellsfoss is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Iceland, not because it’s very big but because it has the uniquely shaped Mt. Kirkjufell as a backdrop, a mountain that appeared in the Game of Thrones TV show.

Kirkjufell Mountain - the most photographed mountain in Iceland, one of the top 10 most beautiful mountains in the world, and yet most recognized as being “Arrow Head Mountain” on Game of Thrones.

Iconic and impressive South Coast of Iceland

Seljalandsfoss - Seljalandsfoss is one of the most breathtaking waterfalls in South Iceland with a whooping 196 ft (60 m) cascade. The waterfall is loved by travelers because you can actually walk behind it! Step behind the curtain of water and marvel at Iceland’s South Coast from a completely new perspective.

In popular culture, Seljalandsfoss Waterfall in Iceland has been featured in movies and music videos. Justin Bieber’s music video for the song “I’ll Show You” was filmed at many South Iceland attractions, including Seljalandsfoss. Parts of the TV series “The Amazing Race 6” and “CKY2K” were shot near the waterfall.

Gljufrabui Waterfalls - Gljúfrabúi waterfall is one of Iceland’s most ravishing hidden gems. Located just off the famous Ring Road, this natural wonder has managed to stay somewhat unknown until recently. Gljúfrabúi waterfall is 40 meters (131ft) and runs from the Gljúfurá River.

Skogafoss - Skógafoss waterfall has been my all-time favorite waterfall in Iceland.

Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland, with a drop of some 60 meters and a width of 25 meters, and you can walk right up to, but be prepared to be drenched. It is just overwhelming standing next to it.

Gluggafoss/Merkjarfoss - Gluggafoss waterfall is one of Iceland’s hidden gems and has a rare geological composition. This unique waterfall is a part of the series of falls running from the river Merkjá. Gluggafoss fall drops in two steps, with an initial plunge of 146 feet followed by falling through three channels for 28 feet, resembling a majestic inverted trident

Reynisfjara Beach - Reynisfjara black sand beach is the most famous beach on the South Coast of Iceland. Its beautiful black sand, powerful waves, and the nearby Reynisdrangar sea stacks make Reynisfjara a truly unique place to visit and a popular filming location (Game of Thrones, Star Wars and more).

Dyrholaey - Are a small peninsula, and it got its name thanks to a gigantic black arch of lava (hill island with door-hole). The rocks of Dyrhólaey lure annually dozens of thousands of migrating birds to bear their eggs here

Vik - Southernmost village of Iceland. Even though it only has a population of about 300 it is an essential place since it is the most significant settlement in a big area. If we are lucky during summer, we can spot puffins there and enjoy good food in delicious restaurants. Overnight at Vik.

Solheimajokull Glacier - Stunning glacier in southern Iceland, between the volcanoes Katla and Eyjafjallajökull. Part of the larger Mýrdalsjökull glacier, Sólheimajökull

South Coast Day 2- Glacier lagoon, Dimond beach, canyons and more.

Kirkjubaejarklaustur - we will be able to see the most extensive lava field ever to flow on Earth in historical time. Drive across Skeiðarársandur, vast tracts of black sandy desert washed down by torrential glacial rivers, to Skaftafell National Park

Skaftafell National Park - Its natural beauty results from favorable weather conditions and the interaction of fire and ice. Beneath the Vatnajökull ice cap, towering above Skaftafell is one of Iceland’s most active volcanic systems. Stop at the Skaftafell National Park to see the attractive Visitors Center and for a walk.In the area are many exciting hiking trails

Svartifoss Waterfall - We can hike to Svartifoss, one of Iceland’s most picturesque waterfalls, famous for the basalt columns surrounding it.

Fjaðrárgljúfur - We will be able to hike to Svartifoss, one of Iceland’s most picturesque waterfalls, famous for the basalt columns that surround it.

Jokulsarlon - The Glacial Lagoon, where massive icebergs, broken off the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, float and grind together in the deep waters of the lagoon, and seals are frequently seen. Kayaking or a boat between the icebergs is an option.

Diamond Beach Jokulsarlon - Black sand beach with amazing icebergs.

Hofn - Overnight in the beautiful town of Höfn with fantastic food and harbor.

The journey of going back

Heimaey - A viewpoint of a beautiful archipelago of 15 islands and 30 rock stacks off the South Coast of Iceland. Aside from their incredible natural beauty, the islands have the world’s largest population of nesting puffins in summer and their own fascinating history.

Kvernufoss - A beautiful 30-meters high (98 ft) waterfall that is half-hidden away in a gorge in South Iceland, yet very close to the ring road.

Eldhraun Lava Field - 565km² Eldhraun lava field flowed from the Laki fissure eruption of 1783. The most enormous lava flow from a single eruption since Iceland’s settlement should have originated from one of the most potent and destructive eruptions. At least 15 farms are known to lie under Eldhraun.

Svinafellsjokull Glacier - Outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, the largest ice cap in Europe. It is one of the country’s most popular places for glacier hiking due to its incredible formations and excellent views.

Sólheimasandur - In 1973 a United States Navy DC plane ran out of fuel and crashed on the black beach at Sólheimasandur, in the South Coast of Iceland.
